Group Supervision for Trainee Sex and Relationship Therapists

Are you in training right now, and looking for a space to process how placement is going with other trainees?

It is important to receive 1:1 supervision, which is a priority, but COSRT also accepts, when you’re in training, up to 40% of supervision hours to come from group supervision.

If you would like some more support in an online group environment, with other people in your position, as well as a qualified therapist and supervisor (me!), you may be interested in joining a group to add to your ongoing 1:1 supervision. Group supervision is where you can learn from others, get opportunities to not feel so alone in this line of work, and to develop your reflective skills.

I am currently gathering expressions of interest, so get in touch if you would like to attend.

These will take place either on a Wednesday or Thursday during the day, once a month. Dates and times will be confirmed when there has been enough interest shown (so tell your fellow trainees!).

I am looking to offer 2 different types of groups supervision:

  1. Drop-in groups for an hour, where you have the freedom to attend when you want to, and will meet different trainees each time and the numbers will vary. If there are more than 4 of you, the time for your supervision log would be split between the amount of attendees.
  2. A small, closed group of 4 trainees committed to attending once a month for 5 months, an hour each time (with an allowance of one session off). This supervision will follow more of a Systemic Therapy Supervision process (please read below for more information on this).
Costs

Both groups will cost £25 per session.
Option 2 would require full payment made ahead of it starting (£125).

More information on option 2:

This will follow a particular type of process. It comes from Systemic Therapy group supervision and I have adjusted it to suit the length of time we have, and to accommodate everyone’s modality of therapy they use. 1 person will present a client per session. The first of the 5 sessions will be an introduction to each other, to learn about each other and to discuss how placement is going so far, and to consider strengths and growing edges. We will then have a session dedicated to one attendee at a time, and will decide on an order in the first session.

  • Check-in – see how everyone is doing in general as we start the session – 10 minutes
  • The nominated person presents to the group a client case they are working with that they would like input on to help them progress with the client. They have 10 minutes to share the information/story and what they feel stuck or struck by from this client.
  • The group will listen, using the skills they are developing as therapists (empathy, curiosity, consideration of other angles).
  • When the presenter finishes, they will turn their mic & camera off and listen to the group discuss their thoughts with each other, including initial responses, their own connections to this story, intervention suggestions and questions they have for the presenter. This will last for 15 minutes.
  • The presenter turns their camera back on and responds to questions for 5-10 minutes  and shares their own reactions/responses to the discussion and share some potential plans of action.
  • The whole group will have a further 5-10 minutes at the end for final reflections and discussions.
  • Check-out – see what everyone is left with and how they’re feeling – 5 minutes
Here is what the presenter would be expected to share about the client (no names or information used to make them easily identifiable):
  • Age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, dis/abilities & any other intersecting identities of note
  • Their presenting issue
  • The work you have done so far including any exercises in between sessions
  • What you feel stuck with
  • What you would like to get from the discussion
